MSNBC reports that Nokia is planning to market, at $21,000 apiece, hand-crafted luxury cellular phones. The images flood my mind: traditional Lapp fab workers in their colorful ancestral clean-room suits, hand-painting the photolithography masks used to manufacture the DSP chips; customized "signature" ring tones personally composed and performed by famous musicians; and, of course, tuxedo-clad Nokia employees on hand to hand-carry each bit of GSM data carefully from the telephone to the nearest cell tower. When it comes to wireless telecommunications, after all, newfangled gadgets just can't hold a candle to the old ways....
